?Engaging followers isn’t an easy task. You need to keep posting fresh content, hold people’s attention, and be timely and relevant. Rather than just posting frequently, you have to find ways to keep your current audience captivated, while also drawing new users.

“The most successful accounts know how to piggyback off trending topics, events in the news and significant policy discussions,” according to a recent Entrepreneur piece. “They recognize that it’s a lot easier to insert yourself into a massive conversation that’s already happening than to start a conversation from scratch.”

Instead of trying to garner a following with all original content, you also can share content from other pages — try being a curator, instead of a creator. It’s important to know what your audience is interested in; study competitors in your space to see what’s popular.

If your account is visually appealing and stands out from the crowd, then people are likely to take notice and follow along. Optimize visuals, and alternate between posting text, pictures and videos.

“When you see a page or account that has extremely high engagement, it’s because they know how to create content that resonates,” says Jonathan Foley, CEO of WULF Marketing. “So if you post with the intention of being extremely relevant to something that’s already happening in the world, you’re going to tap into that traffic.”

Starting a dialogue is also a great way to connect. You can call out people in your stories, and find ways to thank or reward your most involved followers by mentioning specific handles or hashtags.

Have a personality and develop a brand voice that people will want to engage with. Also pay attention to timing, which depends on your audience’s preferences. “Try posting at different times of the day, and track your engagement, says Entrepreneur.

“When you start to see patterns, use them to inform your posting times.”

Here are eight ways you can increase your engagement on your social media:

  1. Always be posting.

  2. Stay relevant by being timely.

  3. Be bold.

  4. Get to know your audience.

  5. Run campaigns and promotions.

  6. Have a personality.

  7. Post when your audience is watching.

  8. Make your posts (and your page) visually appealing.
