Labor of Love: How to Manage Difficult Co-Workers

People’s workplace personas are sometimes complicated by their outside-of-work traumas, experiences and stress. The thin line between their personal and work lives can cause employees to have difficult personalities.

When dealing with difficult personalities in the workplace, knowing about the person’s struggles — with or without the specifics — can be helpful. But even then, taking deep breaths only goes so far when trying to respond with compassion.

It’s been said that difficult personalities should be seen as “angels” who are placed in your life at specific moments to teach you valuable lessons. Whether that theory holds true or not, compassion and cognizance can make such relationships easier to tolerate and even to improve.
