Poker players look for physical cues — smiling, touching noses, adjusting posture, becoming chattier — to determine the nature of their opponent’s hand. But “tells” don’t carry big stakes just for card games.

As a March 9 post from The Atlantic reported, a new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research examines how financial analysts look for signs during earnings conference calls to provide clues about a company’s future.
