Memphis PR Pros React to Elvis Presley’s Death

This is an edited excerpt of an article that appeared in the October 1977 PR Journal.


When the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce opened on Aug. 16, officials couldn’t have been better. More than 16,000 visitors were arriving for a convention; every room in every hotel had been booked for months. Everything was ready.

But an event that literally would shake the world would happen that day. Chamber officials and other Memphians began their work without the slightest hink of the 55-hour ordeal about to engulf them.

At 4 p.m., officials confirmed the passing of Elvis Presley.
