For one weekend every spring, the speed limit in downtown St. Petersburg, Fla. jumps to three digits when the Verizon IndyCar Series comes to town for the Firestone Grand Prix. (This is the seventh straight year that the city’s Grand Prix kicked off the Verizon IndyCar 17-race season.)

This year, members of PRSA’s Tampa Bay Chapter had an opportunity to get up close to the action and gain firsthand insights on some of the unique PR opportunities that come into play when a city hosts a major sporting event.

The program began with a presentation by Chris Steinocher, president and CEO of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. With casual enthusiasm reflecting the laid-back culture of the city, Steinocher discussed the impact the Grand Prix has on St. Petersburg and how the city and Chamber use this international event to drive business and tourism to the area — and leverage the worldwide media exposure.
