A Class of Its Own: Making the Transition From PR Pro to PR Prof

If you’ve been toying with the notion of someday becoming a college instructor so you can share your knowledge and experience with young, eager-to-learn students, then welcome to my world.

After working in PR and marketing for more than 35 years, I have now been teaching college communication courses for more than 15 years. But if you decide to pursue a new career in academia, then be prepared for a realm dominated by textbooks — and oftentimes, by little real-life experience.

Let me be clear: Textbooks are wonderful and can introduce readers to centuries of history and oceans of theory, and they have spurred invention, ignited revolution and fostered change. As I’ve often said, a textbook prompted my own career change from business management to public relations many years ago.
