With her underdog success, ballerina Misty Copeland — the first female African-American principal dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre — is not just a role model for girls, but also a marketer’s dream, branding experts say.

In addition to a string of endorsement deals with brands such as Dr. Pepper and Under Armour, Mattel recently launched a Barbie doll in her likeness, as part of its “Sheroes” program that spotlights boundary-breaking women. She embodies “so many aspirational traits — strength, power, grace, determination and integrity,” said Megan Hartman, strategy director at Red Peak Branding. “You couldn’t handpick better traits for a spokesperson if you tried.”
