Wylie’s Words of Wisdom

February 1, 2016

Over the past five years, author and writing coach Ann Wylie has been offering tips for Tactics readers in her “Writing With Wylie” column. Here is some of her most timeless advice:

  • Readers prefer words that are fluent, familiar and facile. (May 2011)
  • Keep your lead to around 25 words. If it’s longer, then it starts looking too thick to invite readers. (March 2011)
  • Keep your boilerplate to 100 words or less. Even better: Keep it under 50 words. (June 2012)
  • Spend 15 minutes searching for stories about your topic, and then summarize those into a compelling lead. (January 2016)
