Becoming a Giant in a Changing World

Editor’s Note: Michael Herman, APR, Fellow PRSA, who conceived the idea for “Changing Times,” passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. His only published column appeared in the January 2015 issue of Tactics. Members of the Counselors Academy will contribute their thoughts in this space during the coming year.

At the PRSA 2009 International Conference in San Diego, Mike Herman accepted the Gold Anvil — the Society’s highest individual award — with a speech titled “Then, There Were Giants.”

I would characterize “giants” as individuals who knew the profession as it was and had a vision of what it could be. More important, their belief is so visceral that it translates into thoughts and actions. Their words and deeds inspire others to follow their lead, reshape and redefine our profession and allow us to progress to where we are today.
