In professional settings, it’s considered taboo to ask the question, “How much do you make?” To ask such a thing breaks the time-honored custom of putting professionalism before mercenary matters such as people’s salaries and fees.

The thinking behind this is that if you talk about how much money you make, you are begging a comparison between your income and the incomes of those around you, which is likely to make someone feel uncomfortable.

While avoiding talk of money tends to preserve the social order, it can also result in PR professionals — more specifically, independent PR practitioners — being somewhat in the dark about how to set fees and rates.
