PR agency hosts its inaugural Bring Your Parents To Work Day

In an effort to eliminate the ambiguity surrounding the PR profession, New York-based Hunter Public Relations is hosting its inaugural Bring Your Parents To Work Day tomorrow.

This single-day event will provide parents and loved ones of PR practitioners insight into the profession by offering three PR 101 courses in brainstorming, media training and social media.

Hunter PR leaders will also offer the parents several fun electives to introduce them to the range of lifestyle brands the agency represents, including wine tasting and recipe development.

 “We are very proud of the strategic and creative work we do as public relations practitioners, and we wanted our family members to be able to share in our pride in the profession,” Grace Leong, APR, managing partner, Hunter Public Relations, told Tactics. “Through our Take Your Parents to Work Day event, we hope to show our loved ones what a typical day is like and hope they leave with a better understanding of our agency and its culture of client service.”

In addition, a survey of staffers’ parents and family members revealed insights into their lack of understanding of public relations and the fallout from this disconnect, including congratulating their kids for work they had nothing to do with and the embarrassment of not being able to properly explain it (or brag about it!) to their friends.

Among the survey highlights:

  • 85 percent of people surveyed wish they had a better understanding of what PR professionals do for a living.
  • 45 percent of family members think that creating a print advertisement and producing a TV commercial were all typically handled by a PR executive.
  • 38 percent have congratulated their child/family member for work that he or she had nothing to do with.
  • Only 11 percent of people surveyed said they have an excellent understanding of their child/family member’s job as a PR executive.

More than 70 parents are expected to attend.

It's great to see that someone is moving forward with an active approach to educate people about the PR industry. Only by doing things like this will people come to understand our positive role, rather than the "spinning" that has nothing to do with true professionals. It also reinforces the value of the industry. Kudos Hunter Public Relations, everyone involved and those who came up with this idea!
