Before moving into academia, Hazlett practiced nonprofit and government public relations for more than 35 years, managing communication programs for healthcare and member services organizations, as well as the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, the Philippines and the United States. He has served as a member of the PRSA National Board of Directors, and has held leadership positions with the PRSA Educators Academy, PRSA Northeast District, and the PRSA Boston and Hawaii Chapters.
