Despite sluggish job growth and its toll on Americans, a modest increase in charitable giving is an encouraging sign that the economy is rebounding. A new report says that donations in the United States grew nearly 4 percent last year after two years of steep declines, according to an article in The Washington Post on June 16. As the Giving USA Foundation noted, individuals and corporations contributed about $290 billion last year, which was a $10 billion increase from 2009. Donations grew for education, health institutions, arts and humanities organizations, and corporations contributed nearly 11 percent, the study found. “Giving’s back,” Eric Kessler, managing director of Arabella Philanthropic Investment Advisors, told the Post. Clients who had delayed or scaled back their charitable work during the economic downturn are now giving again and are also expanding their efforts, Kessler said.
