Lewis Pryor, APR is assistant director, strategic communications at State Farm Insurance Companies in Bloomington, Ill. where he coordinates the company’s internal communications efforts. He has worked in various communications roles at State Farm since 1995. Prior to this, he was an account coordinator at Ketchum Public Relations in Atlanta. He currently serves as a Board member of PRSA’s Central Illinois Chapter.

To work for a professional sports team

Current livelihood:
Communications leader for an insurance and financial services company

What changed (i.e., how you became interested in public relations):
During my senior year in high school, I was involved in a situation where I nearly lost my life. I decided I wanted to change the world

Account coordinator with Ketchum Public Relations

What you know now that you wish you’d known then:
Showing how public relations impacts business results can set you apart from other practitioners

Best piece of advice ever received:
It’s not what you know, it’s what you can prove — measurement makes the difference

Greatest professional accomplishment: 
Leading a team that received a Bronze Anvil Award

If you weren’t in public relations, you would be:
A small business owner

Desired legacy:
A great leader with the ability to use communications to influence audiences

PR strategies can help an organization connect, engage and influence audiences to achieve their goals
