A strong mission statement goes beyond just saying what a company does; it also represents what a company hopes to do on a larger scale. It’s how a brand explains who they are and how they differentiate themselves from others.

“Companies often need mission statements to define their values, and ensure they’re remaining focused on reaching their goals without getting sidetracked,” according to HubSpot.

JetBlue’s mission statement is: “To inspire humanity — both in the air and on the ground.” And IKEA’s is: “To create a better everyday life for the many people.”

You can take notes from these companies when crafting your own personal mission statement — what you, as an individual, aim to achieve. This can briefly describe what’s important to you in a professional setting and what success means to you.

Explain what you want to do, how you will do it and what impact you want to make, or what skills you will use to reach your end goal — and do this in as few words as possible.

“Try writing down five words that describe you and your purpose, then two, then one. Use these words as inspiration for your mission statement,” HubSpot recommends.

Here are seven tips to help you craft your own:

  1. Think about who you are and who you want to become.
  2. Write down what’s most important to you, what you want your legacy to be and what you’re most passionate about.
  3. Dream big and take time to articulate your goals.
  4. Ask others what they think your biggest strengths are.
  5. Consider what kind of mark you want to leave on the world, and how your skills can help you achieve that.
  6. Keep it short.
  7. Be true to yourself.
