Time to Start Preparing for 2018 Social Media Trends

Technological advancements will disrupt social media in 2018, Entrepreneur predicts. Augmented reality is expected to rise, for example, starting with digital games. Apple’s new iPhone 8 and iPhone X both incorporate a chip that gives users augmented-reality experiences.

Instagram Stories will likely become more popular in 2018. Already, more than 200 million people use the feature every month. Brands interested in connecting with Instagram users will need to master Stories.

Also next year, more brands are expected to invest in influencer marketing to connect with audiences who ignore traditional advertising. More than 90 percent of marketers who employ an influencer-marketing strategy believe it helps connect with new audiences and improve engagement with existing audiences, Entrepreneur reports.

In 2018, anticipate greater focus on Generation Z, whose oldest members are now 22 and just beginning to enter the labor force. Brands will shift social media strategies to platforms beloved by Gen-Zers, such as Snapchat and Instagram. So-called “digital hangouts” such as Houseparty will go mainstream and include live video.

More than 2.5 billion people around the world are reportedly using messaging platforms. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, voice assistants and chatbots will let brands offer personalized shopping experiences on platforms such as Messenger, WhatsApp and Kik. — Greg Beaubien
